Reasons Why You May Not Feel In Control Of Your Life

By Juliette Cruz

You can feel in control of your life but there are many people who do not. In the first place there are those who are born into situations that make them virtual slaves to circumstance. In the second place there are many people who could be in control were it not for difficulties that they might have brought upon themselves. Drug addicts and criminals belong in this group.

Ironically, some people born into positions of great privilege and luxury belong in the first category. It was said the last Chinese Emperor was a sad fellow. Ostensibly he could do exactly as he liked but in reality he was little more than a prisoner in his own palace. The members of the British Royal family evoke less sympathy because they keep their possessions but pull long faces about performing public duties and seek sympathy for the hard lives that believe that they live.

The people who really do deserve sympathy are born into poverty and circumstances which make it almost impossible for them to escape it. A child born on the street or in a hovel may not receive education but be set to work as soon as possible. As it grows the hard grind of poverty will take control of its life determining how it spends its time and what it can purchase.

A poor girl's only asset may be her beauty. No one will try to photograph her from a distance but she may take her only chance at wealth and become a prostitute. In doing this she will probably sacrifice the last shred of control that she has over her life and it will be extremely difficult for her to regain it. Her male counterparts may well turn to crime and end up behind bars with even less control over their lives.

There are millions of other people who have not been born into poverty but perhaps into middle class affluence. They could have taken control of their lives but have somehow lost it due to some tragic flaw within themselves. The most pathetic people in this group are the elderly who might once have been strong and competent.

Across the world retirement villages are built for those who can afford to be in them living happily in most cases. But at the center of most villages there is a Frail care Center and here the most pathetic cases may be found. Busy children may be emotionally devastated to leave parents in such places but their pain probably does not approach that of a person who is buried with a sound mind in a place for the senile and incontinent. There is no help for the most debilitating and degrading disease that is old age.

Patient love and compassion may be the only solution for old age problems but there are many other conditions that can be aided by psychology. In many cases it is self induced stress and emotional imbalances that are at the root of addiction or psychosomatic problems. Old age demands all the courage that a person has.

Difficulties can be daunting. A person who was born poor can be helped by finding employment or funds for him. One who appears bent on his own destruction can be more difficult to assist. However, effective remedies do exist. After many individual or group therapies in which carefully researched theories are applied a person may finally answer 'yes' to the question, 'Do you feel in control of your life?'.
