Taking A Look At African Art History

By Priscilla Sims

African art history helped shape the culture of the world and most especially the land. After all, this place is considered the cradle of mankind. Despite the things that have already been discovered, there is much to know about the place when it comes to their craft and ancient inhabitants.

Taking a look at crafts is one way of getting to know a place including its people and culture. This aspect can help tell early stories and how things began in the land. As for Africa, their craft dating way back thousands of years ago can tell so much about its people.

Majority of the pieces they made are made from clay, stones, rocks, shells, and some metal. During the ancient times, people basically used organic materials which were the only materials they have easy access to. At the time, they may not have thought they were making masterpieces that people nowadays would find interesting.

One of the earliest type of craft created many years ago was rock art. Explorers have found various carvings in many places. Figures of animals were carved into these rocks which are the objects they may have seen in their environment. This gives people a small glimpse of what tribesmen see everyday.

Sculptures were also found in caves and experts determined that these pieces were made long before recorded history. These sculptures depicted human figures and faces which may mean something important to them. With this in mind, one can see that ancient communities have already spent their time creating pieces that symbolized something for them.

Their craft put a lot of emphasis on the human figure. These figures may represent the living or the dead. They could also be representations of the different people during their time. Figures can be that of a tribe chief, hunters, dancers, spirits, and beings they considered gods.

On an unfortunate note, many of these masterpieces have been lost in time. Some may have disintegrated and some are still to be discovered. A vast number of their craft were not preserved as they may have thought it is of no value. Travelers and colonialists also did not pay much attention to this.

At present, many collectors and enthusiasts are after these pieces as they are considered priced objects. This shows how tribes settled in the past and what they did. This a subject that stirred the interest of many. African art history shows how diverse the people are and how their craft has influenced modern day art.
