Finding The Portland Therapist For You

The first thing you need to consider is what type of therapy will be best for you. This will depend on the nature of your problem as well as your budget or what your health insurance will cover. The most common types of therapist are psychiatrists, psychologists and counselors.

Usually the most costly therapy is psychiatry. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who looks at the physical factors that cause mental health problems. Many mental health problems are actually as a result of some chemical imbalance, usually in the brain, and medication can fix this. However, this treatment is most successful if it goes hand in hand with psychotherapy, which a psychiatrist should offer too.

A psychologist uses psychotherapy as well, but cannot prescribe you any medicine. Here the focus is on finding non-medical solutions to your problems and instead of focusing on the physical, the psychologist will look at the way you react to circumstances, how your behavior affects your life and how you can alter your reactions and behavior to improve your life. Sometimes a psychologist may refer you to a psychiatrist for medication too.

One of the more economic options is to see a counselor. While treatment by a psychiatrist or psychologist tends to be long term, a counselor looks at a particular issue and will try to help you resolve this in a couple of weeks. The issue doesn't have to be one of mental health. Couples or families often go to counselors to help their relationships, for instance. There are organizations that have free counseling services, such as the police or women's organizations offering rape trauma counseling.

Any of the directories that list health professionals in the city will have a list of therapists. Choose the type of therapy you need and then find a practitioner close to you. If you're going to see this person regularly, it needs to be easy for you to get there.

One of the most important parts of therapy is that you feel comfortable and safe with the person providing the treatment. There are many types of therapy, so ask about the one that you will receive. If you don't get along with the therapist or if the type of therapy is not for you, find another one.

Most importantly, don't place the responsibility of getting better solely on your Portland therapist and expect him or her to fix you without you doing anything from your side. You need to take responsibility for your own health too and commit to the hard work it will require. Therapy is a long process and not an instant solution, but when done properly, it will be time and money well spent.
