By Saleem Rana

Monday, October 29th, 2012

Jamison Monroe spoke with Allen Cardoza and Dr. Melody Foxx on the "Answers for the Family" talk show, which can easily be heard on LA Talk radio. The topic had to do with what parents can do when their teens indulge in drug abuse. The guest explained that substance abuse extended beyond simply taking recreational drugs and drinking alcohol, it also included ingesting psychedelic medications suggested by doctors.

About Jamison Monroe

Jamison founded Newport Academy as a place that offers compassionate support and effective treatment for teens battling substance abuse issues.

Despite a great private school education and living in a relatively normal household, Jamison felt the stress of having to receive great grades and to do well in sports. Consequently, he started getting addicted to Adderall, a prescription drug that blends amphetamine as well as dextroamphetamine to promote central nervous system stimulation. Jamison now believes that this drug is overprescribed for any type of signs that may indicate attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD).

His road to recovery began after he was admitted to a treatment center that helped him by providing personalized, comprehensive and holistic treatment. The treatment plan, which allowed him to safely address his individual issues while balancing family therapy, would later become the inspiration for creating Newport Academy.

Teen Addiction

Jamison explained how the abuse of prescription drugs was the number one cause of teen deaths. Teenagers either overdosed on the drug because of their mood enhancing properties or they added MAO inhibitors to help them calm down from the effects of central nervous system stimulants. The result of this dangerous drug interaction between stimulants and depressants could lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, organ failure, anxiety, agitation, or even death.

Jamison strongly believes in educating family members so that they can better aid their kids with addiction problems-helping them with the understanding that simply because a physician suggested a medicine, it was not always a harmless choice. Additionally, he explained just what mothers and fathers can easily do to assist their adolescents when they were making harmful decisions. He offered the listeners critical information about the many issues connected with teen drug dependence.

In addition, Jamison provided a short description of the gender-specific, comprehensive therapy programs for teenagers given by Newport Academy. He described the program as a combination of the key variables necessary for successfully helping teenage boys and also girls who were dealing with mental stress, behavioral health and narcotics abuse issues.
