Recognizing The Symptoms Of High Functioning Autism

By Julio Knebel

With high functioning autism or Asperger's the symptoms are less severe than with other conditions on the spectrum. These children are often of average or above average intelligence. Where they do demonstrate problems is in the areas of socialization, communication and behavior.

With conditions such as Asperger's social skills are problematic and despite the fact that children are intelligent, they battle to converse or interact socially. They do have the desire to be involved with others but are often teased and rejected.

They do not recognize verbal or non verbal cues or understand social norms. For example, they may either stare or not make eye contact at all. They may have no idea that they are invading the personal space of the other person as they are unable to read facial expressions and body language. They do not understand the give-and-take of conversation.

Their activities, interests and behavior often show repetitive patterns. They often become obsessed with a specific item or subject. Certain routines and rituals are followed and they tend to make repetitive motions like rocking. When speaking, a certain phrase may be repeated over and over.

Their speech may be quite flat, lacking in tone or pitch. Sometimes they may not speak or they may repeat a certain phrase. They may also lack co-ordination, have unusual facial expressions and be quite clumsy. They may have strong reactions to stimuli that others are hardly aware of such as smells, sounds, textures or flashing lights.

Forming and keeping friendships is extremely difficult under these circumstances. These children are unable to share in the interests and pleasures of others. This often results in increasing isolation and depression, affecting not only the child but the whole family.

It is important to seek a diagnosis if there is any indication that your child is exhibiting these symptoms. With a lack of social skills autism disorders are a possibility. Once diagnosed, more understanding of the condition may make a great difference to a child and treatment can begin.

It is essential that an expert be consulted for a diagnosis. Appropriate tests are done, an extensive medical history is taken and behavior is closely observed for a diagnosis is made. Any other conditions which could cause similar issues are eliminated first.

Even for those coping with high functioning autism, dealing with daily life and relationships is a great challenge. There are several different ways to treat it. Applied behavior analysis, medications, and physical or occupational therapy can all help those with conditions such as this to lead as normal a life as possible.
