Understanding The Different Types Of Therapists

By Lorrie Kamaka

Finding the best among several Seattle therapists could be very challenging. The different options could be quite confusing, while other people don't really know where to begin. Admitting to yourself that you need help is hard enough; now let these guidelines help you with your biggest challenge in life.

Probably the vital thing to do when looking for a reputable and appropriate therapist is to understand the different options. Most often than not, the first search is always confusing. Multiple titles and acronyms may come up, some of which you may not understand their difference, let alone know that they are different.

Emotional and mental health problems most likely go hand in hand. For such reason, choosing an inappropriate therapist for your problem is rampant. Before you go on searching for the right type of therapist understanding your choices is important as it increases the chances of making an appropriate choice. This is a big step for you to be happy hence it's essential for that first step to be accurate.

Probably the first thing that would come to mind when you seek help are social workers. Social workers can sometimes be a volunteer to the community or professionals that received a master's degree in social work. In communities social workers are considered to be the first line of support to individuals or families that are exposed to substance abuse, sexual abuse, domestic abuse and related issues.

A counselor or therapist is a term that is most likely used interchangeably. These professionals are also called as LPC or licensed professional counselor and have successfully achieved a master's degree. Their master's degree is usually in psychology, counseling and other related field.

Psychiatrists are still medical doctors that attained doctorates but are quite different from psychologists. These professionals are M. D. S or medical doctors that have the license to test and diagnose mental problems as well as prescribe necessary medications. Psychologists usually refer their clients to psychiatrists if symptoms warrant.

Psychiatrists provide therapy and direct interaction to patients with mental illness directly. They are medical doctors and have a license to prescribe medication unlike psychologists. Psychologists usually refer their patient to a psychiatrist to get prescription medication or ask a psychiatrist to prescribe medicine for their client.

Searching the most appropriate Seattle therapists starts by understanding your different options. Choose a therapist according to your problems. For example, if you have been sexually molested talking to a social worker can help. However, if you feel depressed at one time then highly elated the next time, then a psychologist or psychiatrist is your best option.
