Career Options for Philosophy degree graduates

By Christian Renolds

Some of the leading skills that employers say they are looking for today are good communications capabilities, analytical thinking, investigative expertise, plus the capacity to plan well and manage data.

And an education in philosophy and other liberal arts subjects teaches students to obtain these skills, which are then applicable to a wide range of jobs in quite a few different fields.

Truthfully, one of the most significant factors to bear in mind about this particular skillset is the fact that it is readily transferrable, which means that it may provide an advantage to philosophy students throughout their careers and help them to make career transitions when needed.

Philosophy graduates get the training and educational background they need to be adaptive and continue learning new capabilities as they advance in a profession or move to a different one.

In reality, in today's fast-paced workplace, no matter how many academic courses you've taken, you are going to definitely discover that you will constantly need to be learning new things and acquiring new abilities as the types of tasks you have to complete and the challenges you face change over the course of your career.

The training you get as part of the undergraduate education in philosophy gives useful preparation for the almost constant need to learn more and to acquire new abilities, or to apply old skills to novel difficulties and tasks.

The principle value gained from a philosophy degree then is not that it trains you ways to do a specific job like an engineering major does, but rather that it trains you how to swiftly and successfully learn the broadly applicable capabilities you will have to have for your first job, and every job you might have after that.

As a result, students who have obtained a bachelor's degree in philosophy can find themselves employed in a wide range of jobs, including management and administration in the business and academic sectors, and in the staffing, public policy, nonprofit, and marketing and advertising fields.

Some other fields that are always favored by philosophy majors include retail sales, public relations, computing, cultural affairs, insurance or banking.

And government positions working for a congressional staff member, federal agencies and bureaus, state and local governments, the United Nations, foreign service agencies, and cultural affairs organizations are additional possibilities.

Certainly one of the time-honored career choices for philosophy students is the publishing sector, where philosophy students might find themselves working as anything from a freelance writer to a journalist, manager or publisher, depending on their own preferences and skills.

Of course, a bachelor's degree in philosophy is also excellent preparation for an advanced degree in business, medicine, or law, as well as in education, history, literature, and in some cases seminary studies.

Success in law school is dependent on skills like the capability to read and analyze complicated written case summaries in order to ascertain the principle points, and to rationally and logically argue one's findings, all of which are abilities that philosophy majors are extremely acquainted with.

And medical school students have to be able to critically evaluate a patient's medical history, analyze symptoms and complaints, and use reasoning to reach an proper diagnosis and treatment.

So if you're a philosophy student, do not stress yourself if you don't see a clear professional path ahead of you like an engineering or accounting student may have, and remember that you are gaining important and employable capabilities that will provide you with a flexibility that will serve you well throughout your working career.
