Great Career Options For A Portland Therapist

By Tara Webb

One of the greatest things about becoming a Portland therapist is that you get to help improve their lives for the better. However, there are so many career options that one can make the wrong choice without the right information. Below is a list of the different career paths that you can take if considering a fulfilling career in therapy.

The title psychologist is granted to an individual by law who has completed accredited education into the study of human behaviors and the mind. Professionals in this department of therapy mostly work in mental health facilities that identify mental problems and treat them. They generally fall into the categories of teachers, applied professionals, or government officials.

The psychiatrist on the other hand is a trained medical practitioner who has specialized in mental health and therapy. Unlike their psychologist colleagues, they have a medical degree from an accredited college. They are also allowed by law to prescribe drugs to patients and even have them admitted into mental institution for constant supervision.

Counselors are also known as Licensed Professional Counselor or LPF and in most cases give the patient the first glance into mental therapy. They are individuals who help clients by establishing trust in the client to allow them to open up and help sort out life problems they might be going through. They are also trained to be able to identify mental problems and can refer a patient to a psychiatrist for further treatment.

Psychoanalysts rely on the theory that all of someone's problems emanate from an experience or deep seated fear. They help clients get to the root of their fears, behaviors, and phobias by getting them into their subconscious thoughts and repressed memories. They do not have to have accreditations from any institutions but some schools do offer courses in psychoanalysis.

While the marriage and family therapist or MFT is very similar to the counselor, their focus is on marriage and family issues. They do this by giving their clients a comfortable environment where they can talk about their issues and together the couple or family comes up with a solution to their problems. They do this type of counseling as either a group or one family member at a time.

Rehabilitation counselors work with members of the community who are undergoing the intensely emotional and stressful period of dealing with a sudden disability. These professionals help the patients come to terms with the current situation as well as the future if the disability is permanent. They work hand in hand with other mental and medical professionals to help one realize their true capabilities in the face of their disability.

The social worker on the other hand works with the larger community and endeavors to show and aid them take advantage of the available resources to improve their lives. They help individuals who are dealing with poverty, addiction, stress, and death among a myriad of other issues. Some of them also make regular house calls as part of their jobs.

Before becoming a Portland therapist one is advised to consult widely especially with an academic counselor. This will help one to identify which field they have a definite interest in. During these sessions with the counselor, one should ask as many questions as possible pertaining to the chosen field.
