How To Find The Right Psychotherapist San Francisco CA

By Patricia Harris

When majoring in psychology, there are often several areas in which one can work upon graduation and certification. In one case, this is as a certified and licensed Psychotherapist San Francisco CA. While this is the case, these individuals can work in a number of different areas, especially if also holding a medical degree.

While often used to help individuals in these areas, the goal of most psychotherapists is to help heal the body, mind and soul of each client. In more difficult situations, the therapy can also be used to help cease, mold and shape negative social skills, compulsions, beliefs, thoughts and emotions to a healthy and more positive state.

With more than a thousand psychotherapy techniques, some have proven better than others. In some cases, therapists focus on ethics and different areas of psychology. For example, when going to a Christian psychotherapist, the individual is most likely going to be told how to live a more religious or spiritual life. Whereas, others may focus more on career oriented and personal issues.

In all cases, psychotherapists tend to work one-on-one with clients unlike psychiatrists and psychologists whom often place clients in groups or family therapy. While this is the case, all professionals including, psychologists, psychiatrists, marriage counselors and professional counselors can provide psychotherapeutic services to clients. As such, some may use a number of different forms of treatment while psychotherapists almost always use a counseling approach.

Officially, the American Psychological Association now recognizes psychotherapy to be an aspect of applied behavior analysis. For, psychological methods are used to change behavior in clients. Whereas, others have defined psychotherapy as a socially authorized healing relationship between provider and client.

Definitions can overlap when it comes to the jobs of psychologists, psychotherapists and psychiatrists. Although, each of these positions provide different forms of treatment. As such, it is important to know in which field one desires to specialize before registering and paying for college or filing a degree plan. For those desiring to become psychiatrists, individuals must hold a four year degree in a Bachelors of Science and attend medical school, followed by an internship and residency.

Somatherapy and sociotherapy are now seen as an aspect of psychotherapy. For, psychotherapists often treat individuals in these areas. In somatherapy, an individual is treated based on past illnesses and injuries while sociotherapy is often treated with ABA. For, as a number of professionals in the field of psychology have recognized, behaviors can often be changed by changing the environment.

While a number of psychotherapists stay true to educational and experiential aspects, others provide a more innovative interpretive or improvisational approach. While this is the case, most professionals in the field of psychology see this type of treatment as psychoanalysis rather than psychotherapy. Regardless, most all therapists base wellness plans and treatment on the specific needs of each client.
