After Diagnosing ADHD In Children Geary County KS Professionals Can Start Treatment

By Cynthia Roberts

For a long time, people with psychological disorders were not recognized as ill or as suffering from a real condition. They were thought of as backward, lazy, stupid or plain mean. Children that did not do well at school were called dumb, slow and even retarded. Luckily, things have changed. Many psychological conditions can now be diagnosed and treated. After diagnosing ADHD in children Geary County KS professionals can help them to cope with school and with life in general.

ADD can cause a variety of symptoms. Most sufferers find it very difficult to concentrate on something for any length of time. They also struggle to relate new knowledge to knowledge they already have. Many ADD patients suffer from mood swings and some of them are prone to aggression. Patients may even develop depression and avoid social interaction. Some patients tend to talk incessantly.

The treatment of ADD has come a long way and there are now drugs that can help patients. These drugs, such as Ritalin for example, are not miracle cures. They can only relieve some of the symptoms of ADD and are therefore at best just one part of a complete treatment program. Many patients cannot use the drugs due to very severe reactions to the active ingredients.

A proper treatment plan for ADD patients is a holistic one. Such a plan consist of a multi prong approach to the treatment. Exercise is one of the more important components. Treatment professionals advise their patients and their parents to exercise at least thirty minutes each day, outdoors, if possible. Exercise leads to the release of dopamine and serotonin and this helps to increase the concentration levels of the patient.

A large number of ADD patients suffer from insomnia. Poor sleeping patterns and a poor quality of sleeping makes the symptoms of ADD worse. That is why sleep is also a part of any ADD treatment plan. Patients need a very strict bed time regime and their rooms must be dark. ADD patients must not have devices such as computers or television sets in their rooms.

Diet is another vital component of the treatment plan. Many AD patients eat almost nothing for days on end. They then literally gorge themselves, often with unhealthy junk food. The best course of action is to eat six small meals each day. Experts say that protein, omega fatty acids and fresh fruit and vegetables should form part of every meal. Processed food and sugar should be avoided if possible.

Most patients also benefit from regular counselling sessions. They are much more likely to adhere to their treatment plan if they understand the condition from which they suffer. Counselling can also help patients to control their aggression and anti social behaviour. Experts even advise that patients take up disciplines such as yoga. It keeps the body supple and it helps to increase the concentration.

Far too many people still think that ADD and similar conditions are contrived, but thankfully, more and more people are starting to understand that ADD is a diagnosable and treatable condition. Patients with ADD did not do something wrong that caused them to suffer with ADD. They need to be treated with respect, love and dignity.
