What To Know About Substance Abuse Treatment MI

By Martha Murphy

Addiction has claimed the lives of many from all across the world. Individuals should, therefore, not be taken captive by this situation because there are a range of treatment options available that they can take advantage of. This can be for the addicts themselves or for an individual who wants to help a family member or friend. With proper treatment and support, addicts usually recover on daily basis. In regards to this, the following is an article on substance abuse treatment MI.

Most often than not, addicts are usually in denial and are not ready to accept that they have a problem. It is, therefore, up to their family and friends to call this to their attention. They should encourage them to seek immediate treatment as there are many specialists ready to help.

For many years on end, addicts have been encouraged to take part in rehabilitation programs so that they can enjoy the best results. These are different and located in various institutions including hospitals. They however all focus on making the patient free of drug dependence through three main stages, detoxification, and therapy and after care.

The detoxification stage is the most challenging of them all but can be persevered if one is determined to get well. Here, the patient is required to stay free of the drug. This is measure taken to help the body free itself from the particular drug. It is associated with a lot of pain and it can sometimes be lethal. In worst cases, medication can be administered to help in controlling this pain.

Once the body is free of these drugs, one graduates to the counseling session. This is usually carried out by trained personnel who clearly understand what these patients go through. Together they determine the root cause of such addiction. This is because there is usually a trigger behind substance abuse. This is where true recovery takes pace as those triggers are all addressed.

There are two main types of counseling. There is the group therapy and individual therapy. Most patients prefer individual counseling due to the privacy associated with it. It gives one more confidence to pour their hearts out without the fear of other people possibly judging them. Another merit of this is that the therapist does not have undivided attention meaning he can be able to put all his focus on his patient.

Group therapy is usually made up of a single therapy attending to many addicts. Despite the fact that a lot of people are involved, it also has its own sets of advantages which are unique to it. To start with, the patients are exposed to an environment where they are able to meet others who are going through the same exact situation. This gives them hope of recovery as they are able to strengthen each other along the way.

The last and final step is the after care. This happens when addicts have been able to successfully complete the other steps. It makes sure that the patient does not subject to the temptation of going back to using drugs. It can be done in a number of different ways. For starters, the patient can be asked to take occasional tests to ascertain that they are clean, visit a therapist every now and then or even join a club for sober people.
