The Difference That DBT In NYC Can Make

By Olive Pate

There are a range of different methods that psychologists use in order to get the best result with their patients. DBT in NYC is one approach that has been successful over the last couple of years and has helped many people go from strength to strength. This is similar to cognitive therapy where it focuses on the behavior of the client in particular.

It is mainly for one type of person who acts in a certain way. They will usually become emotional in certain circumstances where they are stressed. Often this relates to patients who have been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. They will bounce from one mood swing to another a lot. They will see the world in black and white and there are many crisis situations which come into their lives.

A borderline patient will struggle on a daily basis with work and with relationships because stress is just part of life. When they are insulted or when they are faced with a confrontation, then things will flair up. A therapist of this type will help them to turn their negative emotions where they would have lashed out into something which is more controlled.

In a case like this, the therapist will work on how these negative thoughts and emotions can be changed around and one will start to think a more positive way. This will build the person up so they will start to think of certain circumstances and situations in a more realistic way. They may think a particular emotion is a normal part of life instead of blaming it upon themselves. This is what this therapy aims to do.

Someone may be thinking that they are worthless and they have a bad self esteem. There are many parts of their behavior that makes them feel that way. It may be that when they throw a fit of rage, they feel bad afterwards and think that they are a bad person. Thoughts can be changed to something that is more realistic and this will be very helpful.

Getting into a group and listening to what others have to say about their experiences is also something that therapists recommend. Role playing will be one thing that participants will take part in. This will prepare them for the week ahead and the relationships which they may come into contact with.

There are groups sessions available in New York which can be combined with individual attention. This is helpful for a lot of clients, giving them some variety in the therapy. They will be able to see how others handle tricky situations and how they improve after each week. They will also be able to role play with one another in the group.

One also has to deal with underlying issues that the borderline patient has to cope with. Often this entails something that relates to their childhood which is why they go through with this disorder. It could be that they have been abused, for example. They may have post traumatic stress, and they will need help dealing with these emotions.
