The Various Options For ADHD Treatment NYC

By Marsha Klein

The disorder that is known as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, referred to as ADHD, affects mostly children and has adverse effects on not just the children but their parents as well. Any child that suffers from the condition will be frustrated every other day. Members of their family will have their lifestyles disrupted, tantrums and various other forms of misbehavior from the child. In consideration of ADHD treatment NYC residents can benefit from a number of options.

One of the options made use of is behavior modification, a technique that has been applied for decades. This form of therapy is meant for children that are aggressive and have disruptive behavior. Some of the features handled are academic performance, inattention and several other forms of disruptive behavior. Behavioral therapy is divided into five groups. These are direct contingency management, packaged behavioral treatments that are intensive, clinical behavioral therapy, interventions on cognitive-behavioral and medical treatments.

The main aim of cognitive-behavioral interventions is for teaching self control by using verbal individual-instructions, cognitive modeling, individual-evaluation, self-monitoring and other strategies. The therapist and the client meet once every week to attempt and teach them ways of controlling behavior. For instance, the child may be taught to say stop to himself when he is nearly calling out in class. Children with this condition lack such internal cues, hence the need to teach them.

Clinical behavioral therapy is used for teachers, caregivers and parents. During the training sessions, parents get assigned instructions and readings that contain standard behavioral techniques. Such therapists that make use of clinical behavioral therapy work hand in hand with teachers to teach strategies aimed at enhancing behavior.

Intensive behavioral treatments use a combination of clinical behavior therapy and contingency management. These are combined into a program that is intensive and is aimed at improvement of self-control and socialization. When the use of medication is combined with behavioral treatment, it is more effective than using either of the two on their own. With the use of medication, there is scaling down of the behavioral component. This reduces the amount of time parents and teachers spend in behavior shaping.

There is also a reduction in the dose of medications used when the combined approach is used. At any given time when kids are not taking their medicines, behavioral therapy is applied. Stimulants are the best used medicines for the therapy. The main classes of stimulants used are methylphenidates and amphetamines. When these medications are used, there will be increase in attention span, social functioning and finer motor control. The stimulants may be quick-acting or long lasting.

The use of stimulants comes with certain adverse effects. These include insomnia, decrease in appetite, weight loss, irritability and headaches. Some of the side effects that are not as common are irritable moods and difficulty in falling asleep. They are not permanent and are bound to decrease over time as dosage is changed. When the side effects become adverse, it may be time to change medications.

When considering ADHD treatment NYC residents should also consider the case in which it is adults that suffer from it. Most such adults do not even know they are suffering from the disorder. They will always find it hard to be organized, keep appointments or arrive at work in time.
